At Brownwood Regional Medical Center, diagnostic imaging is used to create a graphic depiction of the structures and functions of the body’s organs and other internal systems. These images are used to examine and diagnose certain medical conditions.
Brownwood Regional Medical Center’s Outpatient Imaging and Breast Center opened in November, 2010. Since then, we’ve prided ourselves on providing our community a comfortable and convenient place to receive advanced radiology care, including Brown County’s digital mammography program.
Whether it’s a 32 or 64-slice CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, digital mammography or an X-ray, we have the technology you need. An on-site, board-certified radiologist provides a fast, professional interpretation of the images. We have invested in a secure digital imaging system (PACS) so images can be stored electronically and viewed by your physician. Plus, our skilled and friendly staff is here to help ensure your procedure is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
BRMC offers imaging services in the hospital and in the Outpatient Imaging and Breast Center across from the Emergency Room.
CT Scan (Computerized Tomography)
A CT scan is a procedure that combines multiple X-ray images. CT is distinguished from other imaging tools by its ability to display a combination of soft tissue, bones and blood vessels, all in a single image. Radiologists perform CT scans to diagnose brain, spine, lymph node, sinus, lung, liver, pancreas, kidney, bowel and blood diseases. BRMC has a 32-slice scanner as well as a 64-slice scanner in the Outpatient Imaging and Breast Center.
Nuclear medicine involves the use of radioactive tracers, which allow for the diagnosis of diseases. These exams assist in determining the cause of a medical condition based on physiology (function). Nuclear medicine is useful in diagnosing diseases associated with the heart, bones, thyroid, liver, lung, kidney, brain and gastrointestinal tract.
Ultrasound imaging involves the use of high frequency sound waves to produce moving pictures of a fetus, heart, abdominal organs and other soft tissues inside the body. An echocardiogram is a test in which ultrasound is used to get a good look at the structure and function of the heart, including the chambers,
valves and major blood vessels that exit from the left and right ventricle.
A bone density scan measures the density of the spine, hip and other bones that are the most frequent sites of fracture, and scores the degree of bone loss. It’s easy, fast, and can help your physician determine your risk of developing osteoporosis or plan effective therapy to halt or slow its progress.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
MRI produces detailed images of the brain, spinal cord, joints, soft tissue and the body’s vascular system without the use of ionizing radiation. Doctors use this information to diagnose injuries and diseases in the body’s soft tissues such as torn ligaments, strokes and infections in the brain, spine and joints. BRMC has a 1.5 Tesla high definition machine utilizing 8 channel coils in the hospital. For those who might feel claustrophobic in a traditional MRI, BRMC now offers a 0.35 Tesla Open MRI in the Brownwood Regional Outpatient Imaging and Breast Center, located in a building across from the Emergency Room.
Mammography is one of the most reliable procedures for detecting breast tumors by using low-dose X-rays to produce detailed images of breast tissue. Digital mammography has been shown to increase detection of breast cancer in patients with very dense breast tissue. A MammoPad® breast cushion is used to increase patient comfort during compression. Mammograms are performed in the Brownwood Regional Outpatient Imaging and Breast Center in a building across from the Emergency Room.
